Rubber O-rings: safety and performance in gas appliances

Rubber O-rings seal joints in gas regulators and valves. They prevent leaks and pressure loss. That’s why it’s important to choose material, hardness, and tolerances carefully. With the right groove and proper installation, the seal stays stable for a longer time.

Rubber O-rings and materials

For example, NBR works well with gaseous hydrocarbons and common lubricants. FKM, on the other hand, handles higher temperatures and aggressive chemicals. EPDM is useful in areas of the equipment where there is water or steam. So, material selection depends on the gas, the temperature, and the actual duty cycle.

Geometry, hardness, and groove

First, confirm the size using standard tables. Then set Shore A hardness; 70–80 is usually a good starting point. However, a very soft part can get pinched, while a very hard one may not seat properly. Also check the groove radius and remove sharp edges; this helps reduce cuts in the elastomer. At this stage, rubber O-rings with clean finishes make assembly easier.

Validation testing

Next, run simple tests. For example, chemical compatibility with the gas and assembly lubricants; pressure and bubble tests to check for leaks; and a thermal cycle that simulates on/off conditions.
